Bronx Public & Private Parks & Public Indoor Swim Pools

The Bronx several parks of which a few include public indoor swimming facilities. Click here for a listing of the Bronx Parks including maps showing their locations along with a bit of park history.

There are a couple of indoor public swimming pools in the Bronx. One is at the St Mary's Recreation Center at 450 St. Ann's Avenue in St. Mary's Park and the other is at the Hansborough Recreation Center in the Howard Bennett Playground at 35 West 134th Street.

NYC public indoor swimming pools are open [unconfirmed].

NYC Golfing In The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan & Staten Island

The Bronx has four public golf courses: Mosholu, Van Cortlandt Park are accessible via the MTA / subway. And Pelham Bay Park and Trump golf links are accessible via subway and a brief bus ride. The Trump Golf Links are an NYC golf course owned by the city, for which Mayor Bloomberg had cut a licensing deal with Donald Trump in 2012 to rename and manage it. Since the Capitol Riot / Insurrection, the City has decided to terminate that deal and rename the golf course, but Trump is suing to keep the contract.

Queens has four golf courses and all of them are open this weekend. Click here for details about Queens Golf Courses including maps and links to the operators' websites.

Manhattan doesn't have any golf courses per se, but there is a driving range at 62 Chelsea Piers at 22nd Street and the West Side Highway. There are also three simulated golfing centers in Manhattan that operate under the Five Iron Golf name at 22 Stone Street [at Broad St] in the Financial District, at 138 5th Avenue in the Flatiron District and in the Continental on the third floor at 883 6th Avenue near Macy's and Madison Square Garden.

Brooklyn has a couple of golf courses including Dyker Beach golf course which is accessible via subway and Marine Park golf course which is accessible via subway and bus.

Things To Do in the Bronx Over The Columbus Day Weekend

Art Exhibits in the Bronx & NYC - Columbus Day Weekend

Here are a few museums that are open in the Bronx this Columbus Day weekend.

The Bronx Museum is located along the Grand Concourse just north and east of Yankee Stadium and they are open 1 - 6 pm through the weekend, but not on Monday / Columbus Day.

The Edgar Allen Poe Cottage is also open Friday from 10 am - 3 pm, Saturday 10 am - 4 pm and Sunday from 1 - 5 pm. It is also closed on Columbus Day. Poe Cottage is located on Kingsbridge Road and Grand Concourse in the Fordham neighborhood. It's an historic venue, but there are frequently artistic events centered around writing. See Bronx Historical Society below, as they operate this site as well as the Bronx Historical Society.

The New York Botanical Gardens is also open 10 am - 6 pm Tuesday through Sunday [so closed on Columbus Day]. The Botanical Garden is located along Southern Blvd and Bronx Park Road.

In the photo to your right is a scene inside of the Bronx Museum a while back.

Orchard Beach in Pelham Bay Park is closed, so while there isn't any swimming, per se, on a nice day it's still a great place to visit on bicycle or via car [as the public buses only run during the summer season]. And so is Pelham Bay Park and City Island.

Lehman College for the Performing Arts is located along Goulden Avenue between Bedford Park Blvd West and 197th Street in the Bedford Park neighborhood. It's one of the Bronx top performance venues, but unfortunately on Columbus Day Weekend it's closed.

Manhattan College, Hostos College, Bronx College and Fordham University all organize and sponsor events, but like Lehman College, they don't do much by way of entertainment over the Columbus Day Weekend.

An example of an interesting venue is shown in the photo to your right, where visitors dine and shop along Arthur Avenue in the Little Italy neighborhood of the Bronx.

Street Fairs Columbus Day Weekend in the Bronx

bronx things to do columbus day weekend bronx columbus day weekend nycOn Columbus Day Weekend in the Bronx there are a number of street fairs planned in a number of different Bronx neighborhoods. Click here to view the Columbus Day Weekend Street Fairs in the Bronx NYC, including dates, times and map links.

Shopping in the Bronx & NYC

This is a great weekend to do a bit of shopping. The Bronx is a fun place to shop, especially on the pleasant weather days, some of which [not all] are forecast to arrive this weekend. Click here to view our section about Bronx shopping.

Each of these shopping sections includes, or will include, links to home pages, which have slide shows of merchandise as well as maps, store hours, phone numbers and telephone numbers.

In the photo at right shows a street fair that occurred in the Bronx a few years back.

Bicycling in the Bronx & NYCbronx bike shops in bronx nyc

Bronx has a number and growing list of bike paths. Click here to view a report about bike laws in NYC so you can ride safely. There's a program called Citi Bikes, which allows you to rent a bike using your credit card. Where ever you find bike racks filled with blue bicycles - take a closer look and it's probably a Citi Bike rack and you can rent a bike from there and return it to any of their racks around NYC.

I'm working on a useable map of bike trails in the Bronx, but it'll be a while so don't hold your breath. NYC.gov usually has a good one on their website. In the photo to your right are the front gates to the Bronx Zoo.

Kyaking Along The East River in the Bronx & NYC

There are a couple of kyaking clubs that operate in the Bronx Metro area of NYC. Generally they will provide free use of kyaks or charge only a nominal fee.

Currently there's free kyaking or canoeing along the Bronx River with the Bronx River Alliance. They do events that oftentimes begin at the Mitsubishi River Walk in the Bronx Zoo. This weekend there's a free paddling event on Saturday 10/7 at the Concrete Park boat launch / dock that begins at 11 am. And on Sunday there's a Lake Paddle that begins at the Mitsubishi Riverwalk in the Bronx Zoo. Both events are free, but you must register. For details see - https://bronxriver.org/

And there's also Rocking the Boat.org at Hunts Point Riverside Park at Lafayette Avenue between Edgewater Road and the Bronx River on Saturday only from 1 to 6 pm [ends Labor Day & starts Memorial Day Weekend]. They appear to be growing, and some of their programming has outgrown the summer holiday bookend weekends, so stay tuned, but for now there isn't anything planned over the Columbus Day Weekend.

Dining in the Bronx & NYC

If you know where to look, dining in the Bronx can be an enjoyable culinary journey. The variety of restaurant options and cuisine choices is difficult to match anywhere. And if you shop wisely, you can find good food at reasonable prices.

Italian food along Arthur Avenue in Belmont is just the beginning of a culinary journey through the Bronx. City Island is known for its seafood restaurants. And there's plenty of cuisines from around the Caribbean and the world in between.

Click here to view the Bronx Restaurants NYC section of the site, which includes reviews of the restaurants we've selected to review. As of this writing, we've identified some of our old favorites, but haven't done the deep dive yet.
