Bronx Holiday Lights, Christmas Tree Lightings, Hanukkah Menorah Lightings, Kwanzaa Candle Lightings Background

The holidays are a special time of the year. In ancient times there were harvest celebrations to give thanks and enjoy the bounty of the year after a long season / year of work.

There were also winter solstice celebrations to commemorate the end of the darkening of the skies. Many cultures celebrate with a festival of lights, and in Christian cultures the holidays are marked with holiday lighting, tree lightings, candle lightings - as well as the celebration of giving through the most well known and most generous man in the world - Santa Claus.

The photo at right shows the Christmas tree at the three corners plaza at Third Avenue, 149th Street and Willis / Melrose Avenue in the Mott Haven and Melrose neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, back in the Bronx we celebrate in a number of ways, which carry on some of these ancient traditions. The following provides the dates / times / locales and some details regarding many of the various Bronx holiday markets for folks to enjoy shopping between now and the end of the year.

NYBG Holiday Train Show in the Belmont Neighborhood of the Bronx

Friday, November 17, 2023 - January 15, 2024 from 10 am - 6 pm - Closed Holidays

Description. This 30 year plus family-friendly Bronx holiday event includes a scenic train show of G-scale toy locomotives that run through 175 NYC landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge - all made of natural materials. Be advised that the garden itself is closed on several of these Mondays, as well as on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Admission. Tickets cost $35 / $31 / $20 and kids under age two are free. There's also a grounds pass option for $15 / $7 / $4.

Visit the fire pits at the Leon Levy Visitor Center, see ice sculpting demonstrations, listen to dueling pianos at the Pine Tree Cafe and listen to roving acapella groups.

Admission. Tickets cost $54 / $39 and kids under age two are free.

The Bronx Zoo stays open until 9 pm on the weekends during the holiday lights program, but the live exhibits close at 4 pm.

Admission. Timed tickets run $27 for kids / $37 seniors / $42 adults and children under age two are free.

Throggs Neck Christmas Tree Lighting & Celebration in the Bronx

Description. This holiday event includes free toys, hot chocolate & cookies and free picture with Santa Claus and a tree lighting. St. Benedict's Grammar School choir will be singing holiday songs.
